Bumper cars have more history than almost all the attractions we have here at Charleston Fun Park! That’s right, the bumper car has been around since at least the 1920s, or perhaps even longer. In the last one hundred years, a lot has changed, but a lot has also remained the same! Check out some fun facts about bumper cars.
Did you know originally you weren’t supposed to bump into each other? Believe it or not, at first the point was to dodge the other cars. That’s changed because nowadays bumper cars are designed to whack into each other, but early cars were too fragile for that kind of contact. It’s no fun if your car breaks, after all. They were also really hard to steer. In fact, early bumper cars were described as having “relative steering,” which sounds sort of ominous to us, especially since they were made of tin and sometimes had to be nailed back together between rides.
Do you remember your science classes at all? If you do, you’ll be familiar with our next fun fact: bumper cars demonstrate Newton’s Third Law of Motion! “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” means that when you ram your bumper car into someone else’s, yours will bounce back as well. So next time your kids want to know when they will ever use “all this stuff” while they’re doing homework, bring them to Charleston Fun Park and give them a physics demonstration they won’t soon forget.
